I played Dragon Age: Origins over again for the third time for the sole purpose of achieving a certain ending. My character would become Queen by engaging herself to the heir of the Fereldan throne, Alistair, during the political meeting before the game’s final battle. After the meeting, I went to go talk to Alistair in the game to see what he had to say about our sudden engagement… and was disappointed to find that he had nothing to say about it. The designers hadn’t written anything new for this “secret” option. Frustrated that the creators had left a hole that had instantly taken me out of the story, I decided to study how RPGs are scripted and write the dialogue myself. Later, I coded conversations with Alistair and other party members in Twine to make the scenes fully interactive so that other dissatisfied players could experience them as well.
